In the words of Genet:

“The Coffee Ceremony is an integral part of social and cultural life in Ethiopia. An invitation to attend a Coffee Ceremony is considered a mark of friendship and respect and is an excellent example of Ethiopian hospitality. Everybody in Ethiopia is drinking either black coffee or with milk. Having Coffee Arabica every day makes for a happy life!”

About Genet

Genet is from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Shr first came to Melbourne at the end of December 2010, and after four years Genet was finally able to sponsor her husband and bring him to Australia. Genet has a background in business and marketing, and has worked here in her profession.

Since arriving here, she has been dreaming of sharing the coffee culture of Ethiopia with Melbournians and one day hopes to open up her own coffee shop and share her culture.

Genet says: ‘The coffee ceremony in my country is all about sharing and discussing topics in a safe space creating community’.

SisterWorks is a social enterprise.

We help women who are migrants, asylum seekers and refugees by providing them with skills and job opportunities, so they can become economically independent.

We are a family, we know learning a new skill and sharing our knowledge can support women and their communities.

Our Sisters have experienced social, economic or cultural marginalisation. They are working hard, taking care of their families and adjusting to living in Australia.

As migrants, refugees or asylum seekers, we have experienced various difficulties. We struggle because of the language barrier, cultural differences and the lack of local working experience.

We believe 'work empowers women.' Our aim is to support as many women as possible to move into work in their new homeland, Australia.
