Thread Den's pattern drafting program is designed to enable you to be creating and producing garments designed by you. Learning to pattern draft will open up a world of unique style and creativity that you will have for a lifetime.

Our program is made up of individual courses:

  1. The Skirt - mid 2019
  2. The Bodice- January 2019
  3. The Torso - March 2019

Bodice designs stop like a shirt, Torso drafting includes full garments like dresses and jumpsuits.

Over the 24 hour Torso course students will:

  • Draft and fit a torso block & sleeve block to your own measurements
  • Learn about darts, yokes & design lines
  • Drafting French cuffs, contoured cuffs, rolled up cuffs. Advanced students – vertical pleats,
    crescent shapes & extended caps
  • Design waisted dresses
  • Design waistless dresses, and
  • Design jumpsuits

We utilise a number of techniques; working on calico, pattern paper, cardboard, full size and in third size scale. You will build up a reference tool that you will have for a lifetime of pattern drafting.

Delivered and designed by My Best Friend Jen, our workshops are social and designed for modern guys and girls who want to develop a creative passion. Our pattern drafting program is ideal for individuals who have been sewing from commercial sewing patterns, understand the pattern markings and have a grasp on sewing terminology.  The workshop schedule for each includes pattern drafting lessons, not sewing sessions. To make the most of your course, you want to allow for time to make toiles of your drafted patterns.

17 May 2019 • Pattern Drafting Course - Torso Designs

The class wasn't exactly what I expected but it was fun. The course outline says you'll draft a torso pattern to fit your own measurements, but that's not quite correct. Instead, you'll take a standard block and add/subtract your measurements to it. You will learn to draft collars, cuffs etc however I found that we were required to do most of the actual pattern drafting at home, after being briefly shown how during class. Sometimes there were handouts to go along with the demonstration, but not always. A lot of the drafting is done at half scale using a standard block. This felt like a bit of a waste of time as of course you won't be able to use these for yourself and you'll need to redo the work on your full size pattern. Jen is lovely but talks a lot and loses track of time so the classes ended up being a bit disorganised and often rushed.

Hi Samantha,

Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed review of the Torso drafting course. I think there maybe some handouts that you are missing - you should have one for each week, except the final 3 weeks. As you've said, this is a course teaching the skills and building a reference tool for you that includes smaller scale drafting, handouts and practical drafting of just the elements. It is a shame that we can't do more drafting of full size garments, but there is just too much to cover.
