Description

This introductory beginners sewing class will teach you all the basics to get you started on the sewing machine! You will learn basic sewing skills including how to cut fabric, how to use a simple pattern, and how to perform a few different stitches. You will walk out having finished a project you thought you could never do!  You will gain a solid foundation of machine and hand sewing. You may not be ready to produce a Dior jacket quite yet, but at least you’ll be able to sew that ripped pillow on your couch.

You will learn the fundamentals of your sewing machine and the basic sewing techniques to get your started in sewing! We’ll cover the parts of the machine and get to know what each component does and how to use them. We’ll go over a few sewing exercises to build confidence and introduce few little tricks to improve your accuracy along the way. Finally to tie it all together, and to introduce using patterns and cutting in fabric, we’ll do a mini project to take home.

Students are welcome to bring their own machines or we have Machines you can rent for the workshop!  If you are bring a brand new machine along, please come to the workshop 10-15 minutes prior so Ann-Maree can help you set it up!

ABOUT ANN-MAREE

I’ve been a maker since forever, spending many childhood afternoons mesmerised over DIY books and attempting to recreate them with whatever I could get my hands on. Fast forward another 20 years or so, I had a close call with a civil engineering degree before, saying f*k it and getting formally trained with a Diploma of Applied Fashion at TAFE and a Bachelor of Industrial Design at uni. Whilst I love working in the field, I also love teaching the skills that take mere ideas into reality, it’s like making magic right in front of your eyes!

The class gave me confidence about getting back in to sewing and re-familiarising myself with my machine after so long! Friendly, patient with good demonstrations and clear instructions, there was nothing not to like - better still, going home with something I'd made myself during the class was a bonus! Look forward to venturing back for another class to build-on what I learnt.

Ann-Maree was a great instructor! She really took the time to help us all individually while also running the class as a whole. I loved the project that we walked away with and it was very valuable learning the ins and outs of the machine itself.

The course was excellent!! It gave me confidence in using the sewing machine and has kindled my interest in sewing. I have even started my first projects. The course was well structured and great hands on experience.
