Ever wanted to craft your own silver jewellery? This class is the perfect introduction for those looking to dip their toes in the shiny world of silversmithing. Using the ancient method of lost wax carving, students will learn an easy and low-cost method for making unique pieces all on their own. Lost wax carving starts with making a wax model of your desired object, which is used to create a metal mould called casting. Molten silver is then poured into the mould and, once hardened, filed or carved into its final shape.
We’ll cover the different varieties of wax and their properties, and how to create a ring using basic shaping techniques with files and carving tools. You’ll gain an understanding of the lost wax technique, casting and the finishing of metal jewellery. Explore texture and pattern through the creation of several wax rings and select a favourite to have finished in 925 Silver. You can collect your finished ring a few weeks after the class.
Caity Lane is a Melbourne-based designer and silversmith, and the head and hands behind Metalhead Jewellery. Using the lost wax casting technique, Caity explores shapes and textures outside of the jewellery norm. After completing a Bachelor of Design at the College of Fine Arts/UNSW Sydney, Caity launched Metalhead Jewellery in Sydney in 2014. She then made the move to Melbourne, feeling it a more suitable environment for her quirky aesthetic. Caity’s designs are inspired by heavy metal, raw mountainscapes and handmade imperfection.
