Portrait Drawing Workshop w/ Lisa Nolan - Box Hill Art Group

Portrait Drawing Workshop with Lisa Nolan

Getting a Likeness Presented by Lisa Nolan

Description

Working with a life model and expert guidance, you will learn the proportions, and features of the human head, and many techniques to achieve a likeness. When you look at someone, you are looking at how the features are situated in the face, their size and proportion in relation to each other and the head.

In this workshop we will spend some time going over the features and proportions for drawing a portrait from life, and the last two hours will be working from a live model. We will be going through some exercises to help train your hand eye co-ordination, and look at how tonal values, contrast, edges and shadows all combine to give you a great result.

What you will learn

  • This one day workshop will give you the knowledge to draw faces with confidence in charcoal.

What you will get

  • With expert guidance from Lisa, a court artist and experienced teacher, you will learn proportions, the features of the human head, and many techniques to achieve a likeness. Working with a live model, you will use exercises to train your hand eye co-ordination, and examine how tonal values, contrast, edges and shadows combine to give a great result.

What to bring

  • A3 paper (I use bulky newsprint, but cartridge or anything with a bit of tooth is OK. Nothing shiny). I use loose paper on a board with bulldog clips, a book will smudge with willow charcoal but is OK.
  • Kneadable eraser (sometimes called a putty eraser). Willow charcoal sticks (not charcoal pencils or compressed char-coal). If people have blending stumps, these can be good too.
  • Don't forget to BYO Lunch.

What to wear

Protective clothing (or something that you don't mind getting a bit grubby).

Appropriate for

Anyone with an interest in portraiture will benefit from this hands-on workshop. If you are starting out and are keen to learn portraiture or are an artist wanting to further develop your skills and improve your ability to draw portraits from a well-respected teacher, this full day workshop is for you.
