A Pastel Painting Workshop

Presented by highly acclaimed and very popular artist - Lyn Mellady

This will be an exciting day. Lyn is a master pastellist who is widely recognised in Australian art circles. She has developed her skill over many years and her paintings are widely held in both international public and private collections.

Helping artists achieve their goals and learn from her techniques and insights is something Lyn loves to do.

The subject of this workshop is:

The Influence of Light on Still or Moving Water: Waves on the Shoreline.

The day will begin with a demonstration where Lyn will explain the how and why of her paintings followed by a Q and A session in preparation for the afternoon's activities.

After lunch everyone will begin to apply the techniques explored in the morning to their own paintings. Participants can choose to paint the demonstration painting or something similar of their own. During the afternoon Lyn will then give everyone some personal feedback and tips as the paintings are developing.

At the end of a very full day, Lyn will provide an assessment of the resulting paintings.

This workshop will increase your understanding of this dynamic subject and provide you with some techniques to help you translate the excitement of the moving waves onto paper.

If you don’t have pastels you can hire them on the day.

• SOFT PASTEL STICKS. (No Oil Pastels). REMBRANDT or ARTS SPECTRUM, (less expensive than others and easy to locate) or UNISON or Schmincke which are lovely soft pastels suitable for intense lights and finishing-touches.
• Bring your pastels with you. The colours mentioned below are a good guide for land or seascapes. If you are a beginner Art Spectrum have a Seascape set of 30 pastels. If you prefer, you may hire pastels for the day from Lyn for $15. But DO LET HER KNOW on 0405654110 so she will know how many to bring.

ESSENTIAL colours include:  the light, mid and darkest of each of the following colours.

• ultramarine. (a warm blue) - tasman blue is also useful -
• a cool blue - either turquoise, cobalt and/or pthalo,
• blue grey,
• burt umber, (4 shades inc lightest and darkest)
• raw umber,
• blue violet, make sure you have the very dark and very light Flinders blue violet
• purple grey,
• caput mortuum
• olive green,
• grey green,
• autumn yellows
• Indian or light red
• and a very dark green (Sennelier black green is good - or a Unison dark)
• a very soft white, (Schmincke)
• a very light blue, yellow and orange.

• A notebook or sketch book. A stick of thin Charcoal and white charcoal pencil.
• A few Conte hard pastel sticks. You can draw and do some finished work with hard pastels. They are excellent for fine line work, like fine detail, masts on boats and of course to sign your name. A burt sienna is very useful. (longer lasting than pastel pencils)
• 2 A3 sheets of Arts Spectrum Colour fix or CANSON MI-TEINTES PASTELPAPER in A3 or A4 size in a middle value colour (i.e. rose grey, shadowy purple grey, sand, etc.) White would require an underpainting so a paintbrush as well.
• Several sheets of Glassine paper to protect your pastel painting in transit and to help fix; the finished artwork. 
• BACKING BOARD on which to mount your pastel paper at the easel. MDF, plywood, etc. (not thick as it is too heavy). Cut it slightly larger than the size of paper you intend to work on. (I travel with two 'canvas' boards sandwiching both my papers and finished paintings separated with glassine and held together by bulldog clips) We have backing boards in the studio.
• Bulldog clips or masking tape is used to attach your paper to the backing boards.
• A kneaded eraser, an apron, a wooden pointed skewer or toothpick, a roll of paper towel, 'wet ones' or a smi towel damp on one end. (the latter for healthy work practice)
• A SMILE! Always relax and be willing to step outside of your comfort zone to learn new things. When learning there should be NO emphasis on making “frameable" artworks, so leave that pressure behind. Relax and enjoy the process of working out the best way to make the pigment show what you wanted it to.
• BYO lunch.
