Description

Keeping a few chooks in the backyard used to be a staple of Australian suburban life, and their eggs made up a healthy part of our diet. But even though our house-blocks might be shrinking, a smaller backyard doesn't necessarily mean an end to raising or enjoying them. In this class, you'll find out just how easy it is to keep a few hens as pets and as the ultimate garden recyclers, as well as everything you need to know about housing, protecting and feeding them, and loads of practical ideas on how to live harmoniously with them in your garden.

Suitable for those who have never kept chooks before.

Presented by Sarah Hardgrove

Sarah is a trained horticulturalist with a passion for urban greening, sustainability, biodiversity, waste reduction and green infrastructure. With a thriving garden at home Sarah grows much of her own veggies, incorporating organic gardening and permaculture principles. She has 5 years experience in the nursery industry and more recently has specialised her focus on green roofs and walls. When she is not working at Bulleen Art & Garden, Sarah runs her own business, Wildgrove Horticulture. Services provided include design, installation and maintenance of green roofs, greenwalls and ground level landscapes, and environmental education to schools and the community.

There was lots of interesting information and it's always a good day when you get to talk about chickens. Although I had had chickens before I still picked a lot of ideas and tips on making the chooks comfy, safe and healthy and easy to look after. Would recommend the course and the teacher to anyone feeling the need for fresh eggs and a different pet.

The workshop was great. Maria took us on a journey of preparation and explained the process of preparing, caring and enjoying backyard chickens really well. She certainly loves her chickens but her information was very thorough. Great workshop.
