Introduction to Spinning


Learn the ancient craft of spinning yarn in this hands-on 5-week course with expert guidance from the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria. 

You don't need any spinning experience, and all equipment and materials will be provided. This includes a spinning wheel to use during class and take home for the duration of the course. 

Learn all about using a spinning wheel, different fibres to spin, and how to make your very own unique yarn for your knitting, crochet or weaving projects.


Class sessions:

  • Sunday 1 February -  9am to 12noon
  • Sunday 8 February - 9am to 12noon
  • Sunday 22 February - 9am to 12noon
  • Sunday 1 March - 9am to 12noon
  • Sunday 8 March - 9am to 12noon
  • Sunday 22 March - 9am to 10am (Returning spinning wheel)

3 hours x 6 Weeks

You will learn

  • How to create an even and balanced yarn, ready to be used for your projects
  • How to use and adjust a spinning wheel to get the results you want
  • Preparing and blending wool fleece and other fibres to create unique yarns

You will get

  • Use of a spinning wheel in class and to take home for the duration of the course
  • A wide range of fibres to spin throughout the class including wool, silk and alpaca
  • Expert tips and guidance from an experienced tutor

Appropriate for

This is a beginners course, no spinning experience required.

  • The course includes the hire of a Guild wheel to take home for the duration of the course. You may bring your own wheel.

The Guild's aim is to bring together those who practise handweaving, spinning and allied crafts and to help and encourage them to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills by discussion, demonstration, exhibition, teaching and the provision of quality resource materials.

Our Guild rooms house an excellent library and craft supply, sell members work and host a wonderful range of interest groups, classes and workshops.

We have members and affiliated groups throughout the state.

A 'pace yourself' set of classes run by two skilful instructors in a relaxed and encouraging environment. I wasn't expecting the chmace to experiment with so many different fibres.

If the organiser cancels the class:

You are entitled to a full refund.

If you can't attend the class:

You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

OR

  • A refund can be requested 7 days before class starts. Free of charge.
  • A transfer can be requested 7 days before the class starts. Free of charge.

No changes will be allowed after these times.
