A two-day wheel throwing workshop designed for beginners. Learn the essentials, make your own work, and enjoy a full weekend of clay, creativity and good company at The Northern Pottery.
You will learn
- The essential wheel-throwing foundations including preparing clay, centring, and throwing beginner forms like bowls and cylinders with confidence.
- How to trim, refine and tidy your pieces so they look intentional and well-finished, plus tips for improving shape, height and consistency.
- An introduction to surface options, glazing basics and how the firing process works so you understand what happens to your pieces after the workshop.
You will get
- Two full days of hands-on wheel-throwing guidance with your own wheel, all clay provided, and personalised support from experienced teachers.
- A few finished pieces fired for you at the studio, plus the option to fire extras at standard rates if you’re super productive.
- A welcoming, fully equipped studio environment with tea, coffee and light snacks available throughout the weekend.
Appropriate for
Beginners and beginners-plus — anyone with little or no wheel-throwing experience who wants to learn the foundations over one immersive weekend. Suitable for ages 16 and above.
What to bring
- Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting clay on, and bring a small towel and a water bottle.
- All clay, tools and materials are supplied, though you’re welcome to bring your favourite pottery tools if you prefer using your own.
- No need to purchase anything in advance! Just come ready to get messy and enjoy a creative weekend.
What to wear
Wear comfy clothing that can get messy, plus an apron if you have one. Closed-in shoes are strongly recommended.
Taught by the friendly team at The Northern Pottery, a group of passionate ceramicists who love helping beginners feel at home on the wheel. Our teaching style is relaxed, supportive and hands-on with plenty of guidance, plenty of laughs and just the right amount of clay chaos. We focus on building skills and confidence, not perfection, and making sure everyone enjoys the weekend from start to finish.
Organized by
The Northern Pottery
The Northern Pottery is my clay-covered corner of Hornsby, built around creativity, community and the simple joy of making. With over 20 years of experience working with clay, I’ve created a space where people of all skill levels can slow down, get their hands dirty and enjoy the rhythm of the process.
From wheel throwing to handbuilding and everything in between, our classes are relaxed, welcoming and always just the right amount of muddy. There’s plenty of tea, good chats and no pressure to be perfect — just come along and make something!
