Your Teacher

Sonja Parkinson is a passionate mosaic artist from Nillumbik, renowned for her community-centered projects that unite people through creative expression. With a Working with Children Check, Sonja brings her skills to youth and community spaces, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for all participants.

In November 2018, Sonja volunteered at the Living and Learning Nillumbik summer event, leading a mosaic seat-making workshop for children. She prepared precut tiles to guide the younger artists in creating vibrant designs, which she later grouted and affixed to recycled oil drums, turning them into unique seating for the centre’s garden.

Earlier that year, Sonja also ran a mosaic workshop series at St Andrews Primary School, where she guided every student and staff member in crafting their own mosaic stools. These cherished creations were exhibited at the Wadumbuk Community Centre before being taken home as mementos.

Sonja’s work includes meaningful memorials as well, such as her involvement in the Black Saturday mosaic seat at the St Andrews Market. As part of a team of bushfire survivors, she helped create a mosaic that memorialises Black Saturday and serves as a gift to the community. She also collaborated with this group on the mosaic splashback in the Gregory Burgess-designed Wadumbuk Community Centre, adding depth and beauty to the space.

Through her work, Sonja brings art education, community engagement, and impactful storytelling together, creating lasting, meaningful pieces that strengthen community bonds.

Really enjoyed this class. Sonja was really keen for us to all get everything we wanted out of the work and was available for lots of pointers but never made us feel too watched. Also gave lots of tips for future work using recycled supplies already owned.

A really fabulous way to spend two days (mainly the first day), learning how to make a mosaic. The second day was finishing it off with the grouting. At the end of it, I have a great piece that I will be proud of making, and a new-found knowledge of something I always wanted to learn. There is nothing like having someone there to support you as a you learn a new skill and it was just lovely to be able to do that in the gorgeous grounds of Montsalvat. A brilliant workshop that I am glad I was able to attend.

I am really pleased I chose this class. Sonja was fantastic and kept us motivated and inspired for the whole project. We were all making house numbers and she had prepared the bases for us but the colour choices and design ideas were up to us. Her visual design skills certainly made it easy for us to manage our little design projects; offering suggestions and advice, but letting and encouraging us to develop and explore our visions in a practical and possible way. Her designs are inspiring and utterly lovely, so I think we all aspired to creating the best pieces we could. We had so much fun, chatting and at times, singing along to her playlist. The venue is great and having people popping in to see what were doing was fun too. I would gladly tackle another project in one of her other classes.
