In this session, Claire will guide you through the importance of:
- Understanding your climate
- Getting to know your soil and garden aspects and how to make use of verges or nearby public spaces
- Simple design basics and practical ideas to get you started
- Identifying your “target audience”—the insects, marsupials, birds, reptiles, frogs, bats and more that may call your garden home
- Choosing the right plants and layering them from ground covers to grasses to trees
- Different water sources and why they matter for different species
- Creating shelters, especially for insects like bees and dragonflies
- Why even small actions can create wildlife stepping stones and nature corridors in urban areas
- Building community connections: where to next—catchment groups, wildlife societies, native plant clubs, and more
- Ways to stay informed and keep learning through reading and connecting with others

Your Teacher
Claire is well known for her enthusiastic presenting, writing, broadcasting and educating on her favourite topics; gardening, chooks, children and all things related to sustainability and nature.
She has written for many publications and companies over the years, and you can currently read her regular articles about these topics in Gardening Australia, Earth Garden and Good Organic Gardening Magazines, Rocky Point Growing Confidence and more. Claire is also a regular presenter of gardening and sustainability topics on ABC Radio Brisbane.
On her 2 acre garden in the western suburbs of Brisbane Claire takes pleasure in creating, enjoying and working her eclectic productive yet ornamental garden for herself, husband and 3 children. This is all combined to blend in with the surrounding native habitat.
She has over 30 years’ experience in the horticultural industry ranging from, retail, teaching at tafe, radio, journalism/writing, judging, presenting, photographing, a brand ambassador and taking gardening tours. Claire has a Diploma in Horticulture, a Cert IV in workplace assessment and training and an Adv Cert in Permaculture Design. And is a current member of the Horticultural Media Association of Australia.

- Bookings are considered final once payment is made and no refunds will be given for non-attendance.
- If there are insufficient numbers for an event it may be cancelled or postponed by SGA. If this is the case, you will be notified and given the option of either a full refund or a transfer to a different SGA event of equivalent value.
- Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled starting time for registration and seating
