Introduction to Natural Dyeing
Come and join us for 2 days exploring the fascinating world of natural dyeing. There are many levels at which you can engage with this craft, and we will cover a wide range of the techniques involved. This class should give you the confidence to begin experimenting at home using the materials of your choice, with an understanding of how your choices influence the colour outcomes you can achieve.
Students will observe and participate in a wide range of natural dye activities. We will cover preparation of textiles, application of mordants to assist with dyeing, and dyeing with various types of dye: foraged and purchased, extracts and raw materials. We will use both cellulose and protein fibres.
You will take home a full set of dyed samples from the class including approximately 100g of wool yarn mini skeins and small pieces of cotton fabric.
Preparation before your workshop; Students will be provided with wool yarn prior to class (which can be picked up from the Guild or mailed at an additional cost). and Instructions will be emailed out to students.

- Preparation of textiles, relevance of fibre type, cellulose or protein
- Application of mordants, safety practices, record keeping
- Use of various types and classes of dyes including foraged, purchased, extracts and raw dyes

What to bring
- A Clean glass jar e.g. jam jar with lid that is free from rust, Rubber Gloves
- Some small containers or small plastic bags to take home wet skeins, pen and note book
What to wear
Comfortable clothes appropriate for dyeing activities.
Your Teacher
The Class will be run by members of the guilds existing natural dyeing group. This is a long-standing group, and the participants have extensive knowledge and experience obtained through both the practise and the study of natural dyeing.
