Get a feel for which aspect of ceramic creation suits you best or just have heaps of messy fun over 3 weekends - This short course will offer a condensed introduction to the art of throwing on the potter’s wheel along with a component on hand building and glazing, giving you a brief but insightful overview of the ceramic process.
March Course: 3 sessions with two 3-hour classes on Saturday March 7th and Saturday March 14th, then one week break before your final 2-hour glaze session on Saturday March 28th.
May Course: 3 sessions with two 3-hour classes on Saturday May 2nd and Saturday May 9th, then one week break before your final 2-hour glaze session on Saturday May 23rd.
The first week will focus on throwing the basic forms of cylinders and bowls and you will then move onto trimming and finishing your thrown forms with an introduction to hand building in the 2nd week. In your final week you will be introduced to the art and science of glazing by decorating your finished pieces with full access to our range of individual Clay Talk glazes.
Your experienced tutor Yuso Lee will guide you through the techniques of clay preparation, centering on the wheel, throwing basic forms and decorating your pieces by correctly using the tools and resources in the studio.
About your tutor, Yuso:
Yuso Lee is originally from Korea. She graduated her Bachelor of Art in Ceramics in Korea and a Diploma of Ceramics from Holmesglen TAFE in Melbourne. She has lived in Australia since 2005.
I get my inspiration for ceramic works from my inner emotions and the environment I live in. I work the clay into ceramic pieces which reflect my feelings and aspirations in life. Sometimes I make faces and bodies which represent me and I try to simplify the body and face to show their emotions through these motions and positions.
Clay is an interesting material. I love working with clay because I can show what I want through either 2D paintings or 3D shapes. Clay has a lot of character whether wet, soft, dry or hard. We cannot predict the result and there are many unexpected and exciting outcomes.
