Description

Brenda Ridgewell is the former Director of Jewellery and 3 Design at Curtin University, Western Australia, and has been the recipient of many prestigious awards.

She has exhibited her work throughout Australia, as well as in the USA, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

She is leading a two-day jewellery design course on Sunday the 20 May and the 27 May. The classes commence at 9.30am and conclude at 4pm.

The course will begin with discussion about the concept of design. The focus will be to on how to develop your own idea/ideas and apply them in a personal process for the development of contemporary jewellery.

The workshop will involve drawing, looking at and collecting images of interest to you and making models of your developing ideas.

Between the two workshops there will be time for you to look at your specific concept interests and bring images, drawings etc. to the second weeks session.

The second session will develop using your personal conceptual base with both group and individual discussion, a series of exercises to develop ideas beyond the immediate and eventually a design or series of designs and plans (models) that you can take forward to a resolved piece of contemporary jewellery.

The course is limited to 8 participants. The cost includes materials. However, participants will need to bring an A3 visual dairy and pencils.

29 June 2017 • Beyond The Immediate - Two Day Design workshop

On the first day, Brenda Ridgewell introduced us to a way of looking at objects, in which we focussed on a part or parts of them, which we were then able to visualise in 2 and 3 dimensional forms. We were taken from thinking about the literal, realist view to one which interpreted the shapes and forms contained within the object. The second day's tuition was a progression and extension of the first day, where photos of an object of our choice were used as subjects, interpretive drawings were made and 3 dimensional models were made from those drawings with a view to eventual manufacture as precious metal objects. I felt the course was about changing attitudes from seeing something in a realist and literal way to looking beyond that mindset and creating something as an interpretation of the original. Brenda took us through the process with patience and guidance and although I resisted the concept initially, I now look at my design process with a much less literal approach. More than adequate consumables and the equipment needed for this course were provided by Contemporary Metal.
