Blacksmith Introduction

Perfect for beginners

Over 250 people have attended this class

Learn the foundation skills of the world's oldest trade in 2 days. Master hand-forging techniques and apply your new skills to forge your own household fixtures. You will have your own work area in the historical Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops and use your assigned coal or gas forge, anvil, blacksmithing tongs, hammers and several specialty blacksmithing tools.

You will learn how to be a striker for your partner blacksmith, this is an old tradition in blacksmithing where people cooperate to forge a project. You will have the opportunity to direct your own job as a blacksmith and use a sledge hammer to strike for other students.

The machinery and tools used are refurbished heritage pieces of equipment dating from as far back as the 1880s. We want people to get to know Eveleigh by making things within it’s walls, using its machinery and having fun.

To gain an insight and experience some fundamentals of this ancient skill is testament to the extraordiary understanding, mastery and dedication, with good humour, of Matt our teacher. In addition, the setting within the vast and historic Eveleigh Works with its amazing collection of blacksmithing and machining tools, equipment and apparatus could not have been better. The fellow students were fromall over and great to meet with this common interest - most of all, we all had fun! This is what great memories are made of and the rating goes well beyond the 5 stars. This workshop was thoroughly enjoyable and the fact that it was delivered in the historic setting of the Eveliegh Locomotive Shed made it all the more memorable. Matt, the tutor, was fantastic, bringing his passion, knowledge, speaking skills and good humor together to make this weekend one I won’t forget. I’ll definitely be back for more punching, drifting and forging!! Thanks Matt and all those that participated this workshop with me.

An amazing experience to give you a quick snapshot of the blacksmithing trade. This is my third class with Eveleigh Works - I previously attended the hammer forge and knife making workshop. All three were brilliant. Highly recommend! PS if you want to do all three, I recommend doing intro or hammer forge first, then move onto knife making.
