Intro to Bone Carving

Intro to Bone Carving

Working with Organics

Over 10 people have attended this class

One of the oldest jewellery arts is carving in bone.

Whether done with flint and animal bone as done thousands of years ago, or done with a highspeed micromotor, sandpaper and a choice of Faux Bone, Cow Bone or Tagua nut (known as Vegetable Ivory) the methods are suprisingly similar!
In this class we will be diving into working in 3 dimensions, and how that impacts your design, how best to work with an organic material and finishing up with a unique piece to use as a pendant.
Come along to Gilded Poppy Makery and see how the ancient art of bone carving can enhance your jewellery making and design skills!

+ More

What you will learn

  • Carving bone is a great intro skill to stone carving, working with metal clay, or any other medium where you need to be thinking in 3 dimensions. This is a fun, creative class that really gives you a chance to dive into design!

What you will get

  • You'll be with me from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (unless you're all speedy and we finish up earlier!) so I'll have morning tea ready for you when you get here. Coffee and tea are available for you at anytime, and when we break for lunch, there are a number of cafes and eateries nearby, or you can bring your own lunch if you prefer.
Parking Info

Parking is easily available in Dorset Square. If you're coming for a 3 hour class, you can park anywhere the 3 hour limit is sign posted. If you're coming for an all-day class, you can park on the roof level of the Coles Parking Building for free all-day parking.

What to bring

  • Just yourself! A full kit of materials is included in your class fee, and tools will be provided.

What to wear

This is a no-fire day at the Makery, so anything you’d be comfy in for the day is fine. A suggestion though would be to avoid trailing sleeves that can get caught up in the work, and to keep rings and bracelets to snag-free pieces.

Appropriate for

This is a beginner level class, and open to all. Steady hands is a bonus, but we can work around anything.

Storm provides a thorough and excellent experience for the beginner carver. Set in her shop, this small intimate setting allows for ease of communication and questioning. The small group size also means you can ask as many questions as you need and storm's attention is available. I highly recommend this or any course provided by storm. It was an excellent experience and with storm having such a vast knowledge of artistic avenues you leave with more than you bargained for. Can't wait to go back!
