Description

If you are dreaming about being a beekeeper or just interested in finding out more about bees and beekeeping then this course is for you.

Our backyard beekeeping course will help you understand what beekeeping is all about. During the day we will cover a wide variety of topics including; The biology of a bee hive, how to maintain a healthy hive, the wonders of swarms and how to keep them in check and how to extract honey. Weather permitting we'll also open a hive and have a hands-on demonstration working with hives in the Bee Shed apiary.

The class is limited to 12 people, and we will start the day with a small amount of practical discussion in the classroom and then followed by a hands on day opening and inspecting the hives. If you have a Flow hive we can certainly help with all your questions!

The class is suitable for adults and teenagers who are interested to get started or learn about bees.

What should I wear/bring? Most of our classes take place outdoors so you’ll need clothing suitable for the weather on the day. Even if it is very hot you will need long pants, long sleeves and closed shoes for the practical part of the day. We supply all beekeeping suits. You’ll also need sunscreen and a bottle of water.

Is there parking available? Yes there is plenty of parking available near the Bee Shed. full class details will be emailed a week before the date

Do I need to bring lunch? Yes we do provide coffee and tea but please bring a packed lunch or you may be able to buy some from the nearby cafe

How old do you need to be to do the course? We usually suggest an age of 13 and above for the adult courses but feel free to contact us if you have a special request

Want to grow a bee friendly garden? Learn to be a backyard beekeeper?  Reduce your use of pesticides and herbicides?  Find out about the science of anthecology (that’s the biology of pollination).

Pollinator decline is already having an impact on our food security. We need to take action at a local and national level, after all, we rely on pollinators for one in three bites of food.

Quality food and plenty of housing are essential for thriving pollinator populations.

It is up to all of us to make this happen!
