Description

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make things for your garden, how to use hand tools or how to reuse wooden pallets as a building material?  Following on from our successful Sustainable Building Materials Master Class we are pleased to be able to bring you a Construction Master Class on Building Veggie Growing Boxes from used / reclaimed  wooden pallets.

In this Construction Master Class where you will learn about:

  • How to source used timber pallets
  • Using hand tools safely
  • How to breakdown timber pallets to basic building materials
  • Veggie box design options
  • Build a Veggie Growing Box (approx. 1,100 mm square)

Workshop participants will be split into teams of 3 or 4 to build the Veggie Boxes.

If you are interested in buying one of the boxes made on the day, please email me at r.rowe@sgaonline.org.au to register your interest.  Money raised by selling the boxes will go to the students of Templestowe College to buy additional resources for their permaculture / garden projects and unsold boxes will be integrated into the garden. If you want to buy a box, you will need to take it home on the day and they will be approx. 1,100 mm square.

Safety

Please wear enclosed footwear and sun protection.  You will be actively constructing the boxes using hand tools. If you have a favourite pair of work gloves and / or safety glasses, please bring them along.  We will also have spare gloves and glasses that can be used on the day.

As the permaculture garden is on undulating land, people with walking aids should consider bringing them to the class.

Masterclass Presenter : Drew Barr

Drew has twin passions of earth building and food gardening. He learned wood work and building from his father, began growing veggies, keeping chooks and milking his cow at age 12, and worked as a mud brickie after leaving school.

During a 30 year diversion, he achieved a Masters Degree in the History and Philosophy of Science and held senior sustainability roles in the corporate sector.

Having discovered the importance of being unimportant, he now works with his wife Angie at Templestowe College, mentoring students, gardening, looking after animals, and building stuff.

21 November 2017 • Building Veggie Beds from Pallets

Great day of learning and asking questions. Drew was happy to answer all those burning questions, even the easy ones! Opportunity to learn how to use hammer, drill and other tools -- tips on using them was grateful. End result was super. Lots of teamwork -- this added to the workshop, everyone pitching in, doing this or that and just learning. Thank you Richard for organising it and a great thanks to Drew for his impatience and passion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this event which catered for both beginners and those with more experience. Drew was patient and thorough with his instructions and emphasised safety which was important with an activity such as this. I left feeling like I had learnt a new skill which, left to my own devices, I could utilise at home without feeling like I was totally out of my depth. Thank you to everyone involved. Genevieve
