Large Format View Camera Workshop
For those serious about photography, a large format view camera is the ultimate tool. Our teachers will show you how you can use the various movements such as rise, fall, swing, tilt and shift on the view camera to achieve the perfect picture. Have you ever wondered how some portrait photographers get that amazing shallow depth of field where the nose and eyes are in focus, but the ears are soft? Or, have you ever tried to take a picture looking up at a building while keeping all the lines in the image parallel? Maybe you've wanted to take a landscape image, but the flowers in the forground weren't as large or noticable as you would have liked them to be. That's ok! These things - and more - are possible with large format view cameras.
After being introduced to the magic the view camera is capable of, we'll head out and see what we can do with our new skills. It's not every day you get to explore the architectural spaces, alley ways, factories, studios, film props, street art and hidden spaces of inner city Kensington.
When we're done shooting, we'll come back to the studio and develop our 4x5 plates. If you've used Patterson tanks to develop your film before you'll be familiar with this step, however large format is a little different than your normal 35mm or 120mm rolls. This is another of the large format camera's tricks. You can develop each shot individually - for example you may want to shoot the same image twice, but push or pull one negative while leaving the other at stock exposure to see which effect suits the image best.
