COLOUR AS YOUR SUPERPOWER - TERM 4 OF OUR DRAWING CLASSES IS OPEN!
After School Weekly Kids Drawing Classes, Ages 8-14
Every week at Paint With Me Art School, Northcote Melbourne - 579 High St
Every great artist, illustrator, and designer eventually hits the same wall; Colour. Knowing how it behaves and how to use it with intention is what separates work that catches the eye from work that truly holds it. This term, kids will use acrylic paints, gouache paints, pencils, ink, and pastels to learn all about colour temperature, value (lights and shadows), and how to use colour like an artist to evoke emotion, depth, mood, atmosphere, and accuracy.
Every visual artist or visual professional understands how advanced this is for a kid's class. And that's exactly why we do it! As adult working artists, we wish we had this exposure! It would have saved a lot of paint, and a lot of late nights.
At Paint With Me, our after school drawing classes in term 4 will give kids aged 8 to 14 the kind of structured, skills-based art education that sticks. We are not an afterschool care craft space or a drop-in activity. We are a proper artist's program, run by fine arts qualified teachers who love what we do. We believe every child has more creative potential than they think, and these classes are a chance for them to show that to other creative kids, professional artists, and themselves.
Term 4 theme: Using Colour like an Artist
This term, our after school classes take on colour theory. Not as a detour from drawing, but as a direct extension of it. Line, tone, form, composition - everything students have been building is still at the centre of the program. This term, we are adding a new dimension: understanding colour and how it shapes mood, focus, and meaning in a piece of work.
Because colour theory is best understood through direct experience, students will also pick up a brush this term. Drawing is the foundation, the structure, and the goal. This term, students will use paint as a way to experience colour theory directly - because there is no better way to understand how colours relate, mix, or influence each other than to physically work with them. Illustrators, designers, and fine artists all need colour literacy, which begins with hands-on experimentation.
What the weekly class looks like
Each session runs for one hour and follows a structured format. We open with a short warm-up - a quick observational sketch, a pattern exercise, or a drawing challenge to focus the eye. The main activity builds on what students already know, with each week introducing a new concept connected to the colour theme. Drawing exercises that bring in colour value, warm and cool relationships, and how colour guides the viewer's eye. Students are always making something real, not filling in worksheets.
We close with a brief group share. Students show their work, talk about what they were thinking, and hear what their classmates noticed. It builds confidence in talking about art as well as making it.
