This 8-week course dives into the art of ceramic surface decoration. You’ll explore ways to transform plain clay forms into expressive works of art through underglazes, slips, carving, sgraffito, resist, stencils, mishima and more.
Perfect for potters who already have some throwing or hand-building experience, this course encourages experimentation with layered colour and texture to create unique, finished pieces. Bring your curiosity and prepare to play.
You will learn
- How to use slips, underglazes and oxides for surface decoration.
- Techniques such as sgraffito, carving, masking and mishima.
- How to layer colour, texture and glaze for unique results.

- Eight 2-hour sessions with full studio access.
- All clay, glazes, tools and firings included.
- Personalised guidance and creative freedom.
Appropriate for
Adults and teens aged 15 and above who want a fun, beginner friendly pottery wheel experience with no prior skills needed.
What to bring
- Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting clay on, and bring a small towel and a water bottle.
- All clay, tools and materials are supplied, though you’re welcome to bring your favourite pottery tools if you prefer using your own.
- Bring a few bisque-fired pieces or work created in prior courses (if available).
What to wear
Wear comfy clothing that can get messy, plus an apron if you have one. Closed-in shoes are strongly recommended.

Cancellations & Refunds
If the organiser cancels the class:
You are entitled to a full refund.
If you can't attend the class:
You’re welcome to send someone in your place.
OR
- A refund can be requested 7 days before class starts. An admin fee of AU$10.00 applies.
- A transfer can be requested 3 days before the class starts. Free of charge.
- A credit note can be requested 3 days before the class starts. Free of charge.
No changes will be allowed after these times.

Anyone partaking in any classes or coming to any events at The Northern Pottery or organised by The Northern Pottery must agree to these terms and conditions.

I agree to take on full responsibility for any damages, injuries and for physical and/or personal property, which I might incur whilst participating in classes and/or events organised by The Northern Pottery
2.) PHOTO & VIDEO
I agree to give The Northern Pottery unrestricted publishing rights for any photographs or videos taken at The Northern Pottery classes and events or on The Northern Pottery premises. (For use of The Northern Pottery marketing materials).
