North of the harbour the craft scene leans traditional and course-based. Less drop-in, more apprenticeship — guilds and workshops that teach a craft properly over several sessions rather than in a single evening.
The Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild of NSW in Eastwood is the centre of it. Begin Spinning runs as four three-hour classes and holds a perfect 5.0 rating from 45 reviews. Their Rigid Heddle Loom Weaving beginner class takes you through warping a loom and weaving a first piece. These are among the few places in Sydney still teaching hand spinning and weaving as structured courses.
Further north in Brookvale, Nordic Edge runs maker workshops with a 5.0 rating.
Worth the trip if you want to learn a craft rather than sample one.
