Learn to weave a Scarf on a rigid heddle loom using 100% Wool Yarn.

You will need a - Total of #200gms of 100% wool yarn = 4 x 8ply 50gm balls of wool yarn (2 balls in one color and 2 balls in another color). Preferred plain colors - this will give you the best results when weaving and blending / colors). Nonetheless if you wish to make something a little smaller like a 'infinity scarf' this is also possible or if a full scarf is what you prefer you may need to hire the loom to take home and complete. If you wish to visit the Guild Store you may be able to purchase some yarn. 

You will be learning to thread and set-up a loom in preparation to begin weaving on an Ashford Rigid Heddle Samplelt Loom which the Guild will provide. Should you wish to hire the loom after the class you will need to be a member.

  • Simple methods 1. Setting up your Rigid Heddle Loom 2. Warping loom and tensioning warp made easy
  • How best to wind yarn onto a stick shuttle for easy feeding through loom shed
  • Weaving with perfect tension and achieving perfect selvedges - Twisting a fringe and Wet Finishing your scarf

You will get

  • Each student will receive notes plus demonstration plus lots of tips and tricks
  • You will learn to accomplish the best possible finishes for your scarf
  • Everything you learn on this day will set you on a path to achieving further perfect projects when working on your own

Maria Chiodo is a very experienced teacher/weaver who enjoys teaching and passing on her knowledge to others. Maria has a background in Fashion as a Designer/Teacher which has led to her using woven cloth to design/sew some beautiful clothing, bags, pouches etc.

The Guild brings together people who practise the arts of hand weaving, spinning and associated crafts and fosters and encourages the crafts by instruction, discussion and exhibition.

Joining the Guild has many benefits. These include:

Membership rates are for one calendar year starting 1 January and ending 31 December. New members joining from 1 October receive the balance of the current year for free when purchasing next year’s membership.

Membership, single, with emailed Guild News — $62 for direct deposit, cash or Cheque. An additional fee of $1.50 if you use a card payment facility.

If you would like a posted Guild News there is an additional $15.00.

The class was excellent. I learnt loads about rigid heddle looms and weaving more generally. Maria was so knowledgeable and trouble shooted at least 10 problems I managed to create. I've definitely got the bug for weaving now.

If the organiser cancels the class:

You are entitled to a full refund.

If you can't attend the class:

You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

OR

  • A refund can be requested 14 days before class starts. Free of charge.
  • A transfer can be requested 14 days before the class starts. Free of charge.
  • A credit note can be requested 14 days before the class starts. Free of charge.

No changes will be allowed after these times.

Materials

Most courses have requirement lists and a materials fee payable to your tutor in class. 

Location of Workshops 

Most workshops will be held at the Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild at Brush Farm House, 19 Lawson St, Eastwood. There is parking behind the house. Public transport is by bus accessed from Eastwood or Parramatta stations.

Times

Participants should arrive 30 minutes prior to class commencing. The venue must be cleaned up within 30 minutes of class finishing.

Discounts on Workshops

Network Groups: For each course, one member may pay at the member’s rate on confirmation of their financial status by their group and its approval.

Knitters Guild NSW: We have a reciprocal arrangement with the Knitters Guild whereby their members may enroll at members’ prices and vice versa.
