Susan (Suzy) Weir is an industrial designer and creator.
Her curiously unusual design aesthetic is articulated through hand-made objects, ornament, and fantastically interesting and out of the box wearable-art pieces.
"My brand is called industrial bling, my vision is to create unique artefacts. I do this by marrying ancient hand-crafted alchemy with modern technology."
I work in precious and semi precious metals and with colorful gemstones and pearls to create extraordinarily unusual collections.
"Working in my shop/gallery/ workshop no.7 Nickson St. Surry Hills NSW Australia, I welcome visitors who enjoy seeing jewellery being made in ancient and modern methods."
Suzy's work is featured in MONA Tasmania and The Powerhouse Museum Sydney Australia where she develops product for their exhibitions.
Suzy's paternal family name means 'metal artisan.' Her ancestors worked ornate decoration into metal as far back as the bronze age. Additionally, on her maternal side, immigrant grandparents were tailors and lacemakers and taught tailoring in the old country. Thus her fascination with the ancient lost techniques and with the beauty hidden inside primitive artifacts made by hand.
Though her incredibly unique work is influenced by antiquity, museology, sculpture, architecture, maritime and the world around us, her experimentations in metallurgy have new and surprising results, such as the creamy silver finish on her 'nautical signal flag' collection. Her "plus sign" series of wearable art is irresistibly tactile and made from select minerals and gems chosen for their compatibility in color, texture and shape.
Each industrial bling piece is imbossed with her fossilized maker's mark, +5º , ensuring its authenticity, as well as evidence of the artists own handprint.
"I believe that in the beginning of the 21 st century we are craving evidence of the handmade in objects. We look for meaning... for things that have an antiquarian provenance or a new story to tell."
Suzy's work has a new story and affords the wearer an opportunity to create their own story with her handmade, limited editions. Enjoyed by TV celebrities, design prospectors, ancient hipsters, young fashionista and you!
