Description

PORTRAIT PAINTING WITH RACHAEL ROBB

This class focuses on tonal values in portrait painting, and drawing skills are not essential as you will learn to transfer your chosen image.  In this two-part oil painting intensive we will cover the process of oil painting in grisaille* and you will learn:

  • How to prepare your surface to help your work 'glow'
  • How to identify the darkest shadows and brightest highlights, and apply them accurately
  • How to create the illusion of three-dimensional form in monochrome

This workshop is suitable for students who already have basic oil-painting skills, and who are keen to strengthen observational skills in seeing values (the degree of light or dark), and applying that to painting. Learning to correctly identify values is invaluable for painting convincing three-dimensional forms in colour. You will be given a selection of reference image to choose from, and shown how to easily transfer your image to the painting surface, saving on drawing time so that you can focus on the painting.

Students wishing to continue working on their painting with the same tutor can book our Sunday afternoon Open Studio for further technical support and guidance.

*Grisaille (originating from the French word "gris" meaning "grey"), is a method of working monochromatically, traditionally in values of grey, either as a preliminary underpainting for glazing with layers of colour, or as a work in its own right. Odalisque in Grisaille (c. 1824-34), by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres is a wonderful example of grisaille.

Super interesting class. Picked up some great tips along the way including how to transfer an image onto the painting surface easily using charcoal. I also loved learning about the history of the Grisaille technique. In saying that, I feel like the classes could have gone slightly longer so that everyone had the time to finish their pieces off. I felt a little rushed and also would have loved a deeper dive into the techniques for painting convincing three-dimensional forms, which was lacking in this class.

This was such an interesting and useful class in learning about light, depth, tones, values... So many possibilities with monochrome! And with the best guidance and encouragement from Rachel!
