


Woodwork for Beginners: Archway Style Stool
Description
This 10-week course will introduce participants to working with tools (conventional tools, hand-held power tools, and some stand-alone power tools) and working with timber. It will include lots of practice in a great learning space for people who want to learn woodwork as a hobby or are looking for training and employment pathways in this field.
Project : Archway Style Stool
(Please note that the above image is of an unfinished project. The piece still needs to have round overs and/or Chamfered edges, and an oil finish).
The design of the side table/stool is from an Architect, Viviana Fagnani designed and made in 2017. Inspired by the Keystone in and Roman arches.
- The construction methods employed in making this piece of furniture will include laminating, sanding, jointing, marking and measuring, profiling cut timber, glueing, chiselling and planning. clamping and assembly of joinery.
- The workshop machines utilised for the construction will be a bandsaw, mitre saw, orbital sander, bobbin sander, biscuit joiner, and a selection of hand tools, planes, chisels, marking and measuring equipment.
- The participants of this course will establish a good understanding of basic joinery, learning the principles of how to machine wood, jointing, and creating a skill set that can be translated to further projects.
- The timber being used to make the item is 'Oregon' or 'Douglas Fir'.

Your Teacher
Andy is a skilled and experienced carpenter and woodworker. With a background in industrial design, Andy began his career restoring and converting barns in the Cotswolds, England.
After moving to Australia, he specialized in creating bespoke furniture for a variety of commercial and private clients. His work also includes refurbishing significant historic buildings, such as the Parliament House in Melbourne. Andy is eager to use his extensive knowledge and skills to support beginners as they embark on their woodworking journeys.
He has designed a fantastic small project, to help you get started!
