Description

Starting the "Carbon In Your Garden" series, we discover "Growing your Own Herbs and Teas". Herbs, often lush green and wrapped in plastic, are among the most energy-intensive foods available due to the transportation requirements needed to have them arrive fresh and undamaged onto store shelves. A process that results in significant carbon emissions. However, with a small patch of earth or even a large pot, you can grow your own herbs, significantly reducing your carbon footprint.

In this one-hour Master Class session, delivered by Donna Livermore, will explore the intricacies of growing herbs and give you the knowledge to feel confident to start (or continue) to grow your own herbs at home.  We will discuss:

- why we should all have at least a few herbs growing in our gardens, balconies or windowsills.

- how to select the right herbs for your climate, season and garden

- perennial verses annually herbs - the pros and cons.

- the easiest herbs to grow for cooking and teas

- herbs as nutritional powerhouses

- simple techniques to harvest and propagate your herbs

- herbs as companion plants

This session is one of four in a Masterclass Series "Carbon In Your Garden". Other topics include – Edible Weeds: The Most Carbon Saving Food, Bloom at Home: Why and How to Grow Your Own Cut Flowers, Importance of Native Grasses in Your Garden.  Book the Series Package for discount.  Friends of SGA receive a 15% discount on Master Class full price tickets.
