In this 6 hour intensive workshop you’ll be introduced to a range of basic leather working skills that will enable you to make not one, but two custom projects!
Leather crafter and designer Katie Engelhardt from Studio Liebling will lead you through basic leather crafting techniques as you put them into practice creating your very own leather belt and card wallet. With a focus on the material, tools and process, you’ll first get to try your hand at cutting leather, stamping and riveting to create your on custom belt made from locally sourced, Australian veg tanned leather, while the second half of the workshop will be spent learning the traditional method of saddle-stitching. Katie will guide you through this sturdy leather sewing technique as you create your own 3 pocket leather card wallet that will be super-tough, totally compact & handy, and very, very good-looking!
Along the way you will also gain some insight into the different types of leather, it’s structure and layers, find out the difference between ‘full-grain’ and ‘genuine’ leather, how to properly care for your leather items and a little about the local leather industry and practices.
A fun and practical workshop jam-packed full of info, suitable for beginners, or anyone looking to deepen their understanding of leatherwork!
ABOUT KATIE FROM STUDIO LIEBLING
Katie Engelhardt is a second-generation leatherworker and the designer and maker of Melbourne based leather goods company, Studio Liebling. Making functional objects and jewellery from locally sourced leather, reclaimed native Australian wood, solid brass, and a decent dose of saturated colour and metallics.
Katie utilises traditional leather crafting methods and tools, and all stages of production are hand worked, from the cutting of the leather, to the dying, stitching, burnishing and finishing.
Through her apprenticeship in traditional leather crafting and background as an event stylist and set dresser, Katie has developed an individual approach to colour and shape, combining traditional leather working techniques with a contemporary aesthetic.
Enthusiastic about her craft, Katie loves any opportunity to share the skills she’s gathered along the way with others.
Katie introduced the class to leather, different types, uses, hows, whys, and we got to make two things. She was generous with information and help and her enthusiasm for her craft absolutely shone through. She managed the class well, no one felt left behind. She made it fun, but also did things properly. I was very impressed with the quality of what we made, and she let us use all her tools. The real deal, I loved it. Thank you so much, it was great.
We learned how to make a wallet and belt and that leather is a scarcity market in Australia so would love to support in getting more leather goods locally made if possible or perhaps even make them just for gifts and personal use. Enjoyed the whole workshop and felt like time just flew by which is great because you are enjoying crafting your unique item.that is personal to you and with the 30min break it was enough to have a coffee around amazing fitzroy, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything 😊. Love to hear of future workshops to continue from what we learned perhaps to leather bags or even jackets? 😊. Love to make and wear my own leather jacket that would be amazing 😊.
Katie is really friendly and super bubbly which made the whole experience so enjoyable! This was her first intensive double workshop, but it didn't feel like 7hours! Time flies when you're having fun! :) We learnt so much about the basics of leatherwork and took away with us not only our very own belt and wallet, but lots of new skills! :) Thanks for a great workshop! Highly recommend!!
