Learn to Sew at The Makery: Make a 4 Patch Cushion

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences is co-ordinating the Sydney Science Festival, and as a part of that they are coordinating a Maker Open House Day on Sunday August 20th.   Diverse maker spaces and groups will be opening their doors to the public. We are offering a 2 for 1 special for our Learn to Sew classes on the day... sew get in quick as spaces are limited!

Brighten up your bed or sofa with a hand made edged cushion. Mindy will guide you step by step in this class to make your own perfect cushion. Whether you are a complete beginner, or need a brush up on your sewing skills this workshop is for you.

ABOUT MINDY MCTAGGART

Mindy McTaggart had her first machine sewing lesson with her great Aunt at the age of about 5 or 6 sewing on a treadle Singersewing machine. Her project was to make aprons for said Aunts fellow nuns of the Order of the Sacred Heart.

She progressed on to an electrical machine and bigger and better projects.

In her final year of Fashion Design Studies, at the Narional Art School, Mindy was selected as the Australian Candidate for the Smirnoff International Fashion Award. Here she showcased a small collection she printed, embellished, cut and sewed together, titled The Altered Image.

Today in Partnership with Emma Cotterill, Mindy creates bespoke and Avante Garde styles for their label Millicent Darling – where their work is often featured in Hairdressing campaigns and Magazines.

Class Schedule

What you will learn
  • We will cover basic hand and machine stitches and sewing safety
  • How to correctly pin and cut projects.
  • Learn how to turn sharp corners and insert a lapped zip at the back of your cushion.
What you will get
  • All materials will be provided, including use of sewing machines
  • Your own handmade 4 patch cushion!
  • Confidence in using a sewing machine

What to bring
  • All will be provided or if you prefer you may bring your own fabric
  • You can bring your own machine or use our sewing machines –Please email makery@work-shop.com.au if you plan to bring your own machine and arrive 10 minutes earlier to set up.
What to wear

Casual, Please wear enclosed shoes.

Cancelation & Refund Policy

REFUNDS

Work-Shop requires 72 hours notice in writing prior to the class for a full refund. If you miss this window, earn some extra karma points and give your ticket to one of your buddies. The tickets are fully transferable. Email learn@work-shop.com.au to organise a refund.

CANCELLATIONS

We’ll do our darndest to run all scheduled classes, however, let’s face it… sometimes shit happens! Most of our classes must have a minimum of 5 participants before we can put them on. In the event that a class is cancelled, students will be notified via email and entitled to a full refund or credit.

Anyone partaking in any classes or coming to any events at Work-Shop or organised by Work-Shop must agree to these terms and conditions.

  •  Any damage, loss or theft incurred to personal property property brought into Work-Shop’s premises.

I agree to take on full responsibility for any damages, injuries and for physical and/or personal property, which I might incur whilst participating in classes and/or events organised by Work-Shop.

2.) PHOTO & VIDEO

I agree to give Work-Shop unrestricted publishing rights for any photographs or videos taken at Work-Shop classes and events or on Work-Shop’s premises. (Don’t worry, we’ll only these use to show others how much of a rad time you’re having through social media, newsletters, blogs, website and general Work-Shop promo material)

A great workshop with an awesome product - my 4-patch cushion with piping. Mindy showed us the basics and some more! And made it all really easy. Thanks to Mindy, and Paul at The Makery for a great workshop!
