Description

Learn the foundation skills of the world's oldest trade in 2 days. Master hand-forging techniques and apply your new skills to forge your own household fixtures. You will have your own work area in the historical Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops and use your assigned coal or gas forge, anvil, blacksmithing tongs, hammers and several specialty blacksmithing tools.

You will learn how to be a striker for your partner blacksmith, this is an old tradition in blacksmithing where people cooperate to forge a project. You will have the opportunity to direct your own job as a blacksmith and use a sledge hammer to strike for other students.

The machinery and tools used are refurbished heritage pieces of equipment dating from as far back as the 1880s. We want people to get to know Eveleigh by making things within it’s walls, using its machinery and having fun.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a blacksmithing weekend course at Everleigh Works, and I must say, it was an incredible experience. James, our instructor, was amazing. He gave clear instructions, demonstrations, and advice every step of the way, making the learning process smooth and enjoyable. As a beginner, I was initially intimidated by the idea of working with hot metal and tools, but James's expertise and guidance quickly put me at ease. His teaching style was quirky yet patient and encouraging. One of the highlights of the course was the venue itself. The historic surroundings of the Everleigh Railway works and the authentic equipment used in the course made it feel like we were stepping back in time. Overall, I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in blacksmithing. James's expertise and guidance and the amazing venue made for an unforgettable experience. Thank you to everyone involved in organizing such a fantastic weekend!
