Description

Suitable for beginners.

Learn basic leather working skills and make your own leather phone sleeve in this 3 hour, project-based leathercraft for beginners workshop with leather crafter & designer Katie Engelhardt from Studio Liebling.

Using locally sourced, Australian veg tanned leather and colourful Kangaroo leather, you will customise a pattern to suit your phone size, learn the traditional technique of saddle-stitching (choosing from some ace thread colours!) and finally try your hand at stamping and personalise your phone sleeve with your initials.

Along the way you will also gain some insight into the different types of leather, its structure and layers, find out the difference between “full-grain” and “genuine” leather, how to properly care for your leather items and little about the local leather industry and practices.

Who is this workshop for?

A fun, skills-based workshop suitable for the absolute beginner up to those wanting to expand their leather-crafting skills.

Leather, materials, tools to use on the day and refreshments will be supplied.

About the tutor

Katie Engelhardt from Studio Liebling

Katie Engelhardt is a second-generation leatherworker and the owner, designer and maker at Melbourne based leather goods company, Studio Liebling. Making functional objects and jewellery from locally sourced leather, reclaimed native Australian wood, solid brass, and a decent dose of saturated colour and metallics.

Katie utilises traditional leather crafting methods and tools, and all stages of production are hand worked, from the cutting of the leather, to the dying, stitching, burnishing and finishing.

Through her apprenticeship in traditional leather crafting and background as an event stylist and set dresser, Katie has developed an individual approach to colour and shape, combining traditional leather working techniques with a contemporary aesthetic.

Enthusiastic about her craft, Katie loves any opportunity to share the skills she’s gathered along the way with others.
