Drawing Studio 2: Tutor Julian Aubrey Smith

Level: Intermediate

Designed as a continuation of our Drawing Studio 1 programme, this course offers a pathway for beginners towards life-drawing, exploring form and figure.

During the course we will cover:

  • composition, measurement, dividing pictorial space
  • constructive drawing, geometric solids and volume
  • formal and exploratory drawing techniques
  • rendering techniques to accurately describe form and tone
  •  'drawing in the flat’ including masterwork transcriptions / studies
  • an introduction to life drawing and student/model etiquette

This four-week course follows a series of exercises to deepen appreciation and analysis of artworks and of our immediate surroundings, assisting students to learn to draw accurately both from life and from master copies. A range of media including charcoal, graphite,  coloured pencil, coloured chalk and its application will be used.

This course is suitable for students who already have basic drawing skills or who have completed our Drawing Studio 1 course.  There will be demonstrations and one-on-one guidance throughout the course. Students are able to continue to Drawing Studio 3 at the end of this course.

All materials and refreshments are supplied.

This was my second drawing studio class with Julian and I really enjoyed it. He has a wealth of knowledge, experience and skill, and his approach to teaching is relaxed and non judgmental. Highly recommend these drawing studios!

Julian was very helpful and offered advice gently and succinctly. Working with students with a broad range of skills, it felt like everyone came away knowing a little more than they did prior to each class. Thanks for having me!
