Develop your understanding of colour with practical demonstrations and painting exercises using still-life setups each week!
LEVEL: Intermediate to advanced
Competent colour mixing is critical for artists wanting control of their work - being able to mix and use the colour you want with confidence. This five-week course is beneficial for students who wish to gain a deeper understanding of colour mixing and how to use colour effectively.
In this course we will begin with our Colour Mixing Workshop to develop an understanding of advanced colour mixing principles. During each class we will look at how the masters of colour across history have developed their palettes, and each week we will use a new still-life set up each week to put this into practice and expand further on different elements of the colour workshop, including:
- High-key colours and adjusting the heat and intensity
- How to mix all colours down in intensity, and gradually adjust as the work progresses
- How to make a tonal/ reduced colour painting using the beautiful range of greys created in the colour mixing workshop
- In the last class we will construct a new work using the available approaches, techniques and lessons learnt so far, with an emphasis on creating the illusion of depth in the picture.
This course is suitable for students and artists with basic oil painting experience.
Please bring your own paints and brushes, any extra colours required will be supplied.

- How the colour wheel works and the possibilities of manipulation of colour through mixing complementaries.
- Introducing an earth palette into the primary/secondary colours and exploring the colour possibilities and options doing so.
- Understanding how to control the intensity and quietness of colour, and how warm and cool colours behave, as a vehicle for controlling space and depth in painting.

Parking is ticketed in Brunswick St but there are some 2-4 hour spots in the surrounding streets. The No 11 tram comes down Brunswick St, get off at stop 15. All-day parking on Brunswick St is a flat fee of $12 on Sundays only.

- Own oil paints and brushes. Extra colours will be supplied.

A working artists studio, the space provides a great environment to develop your painting and drawing skills with the expert support and guidance of highly qualified teachers and full-time professional artists.
Our 4 - week beginners courses in oil painting, drawing and watercolours are designed for the complete beginner, taking you through a series of exercises and building your skills week by week. Students may choose to continue to our Beginners Courses Level 2 and 3 in both painting and drawing.. Ongoing students are supported to help develop their own direction, with optional exercises offered to expand on skills and knowledge, and our Atelier students are assisted in taking it to the next level in professional practice.
Love the class? All students wishing to extend their course may purchase class-passes for ongoing students at a discounted rate. Some of our students have gone on to Higher Education courses and are now exhibiting professionally!
Evening classes include wine and refreshments, and morning classes include tea, coffee and cakes. Classes run for 3 hours and basic equipment is available for student use at the studio, including easels, palettes and drawing boards. We believe in safe studio-practice and provide low-toxic, low-odour materials for student use, as well as high-quality clean-up materials for brushes and hands. We also have storage facilities if you wish to keep your materials at the studio.
Each student works at their own pace and receives one-on-one attention, and all students are invited to exhibit in our annual end of year exhibition, a fun opportunity to show family and friends what you’ve been doing!

Your Teacher
Known for his abstract paintings, artist Ross Laurie was born in Walcha, located in the northern tablelands of NSW in 1961. Laurie studied Visual Art at Sydney College of the Arts in 1982, and graduated in painting at the Victorian College Prahan in 1986. Laurie currently lives and practices in Walcha, NSW.
Laurie has won the Norville Prize for Landscape Painting, the COFA Print Award at the Paddington Art Prize and the Kings School Art Prize, and has been a finalist in the Dobell Drawing Biennial and the Wynne Prize. Notably, Laurie’s work has been selected for the Salon des Refuses ten times between 1995 and 2019.
The artist’s work can be found in numerous state and corporate collections such as Artbank, AGNSW, National Gallery of Australia, New England Regional Art Museum, Tamworth Regional Gallery, the Laverty Collection Sydney, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Macquarie Bank Collection and NRMA Sydney.

No changes will be allowed after these times.

Fitzroy Painting is under no obligation to offer any ‘make-up’ classes, courses or workshops missed.
Absences without notification will forfeit the full class/course fee and receive no credit. By proceeding with your booking you agree to these terms & conditions.
Should Fitzroy Painting be forced to cancel a class due to low enrolments, you will be notified as soon as possible prior to the scheduled class and will receive a refund, transfer or a credit voucher for a replacement class, course or workshop.
Collection of work and materials left at the studio: Please understand that our storage capacity is extremely limited. Beginners work and painting kits will only be retained for one month after which they will be disposed of.
