Hand building a big pot

Big Pot Weekend

Spend a weekend hand building a big pot!

Description

Come and build your own big pot! Pie Bolton will guide you through the building of a large pot over Saturday and Sunday.

This weekend is suitable for those just starting out in ceramics and those with more experience. We will start off by discussing form and inspiration in an inclusive and conversational way and then get straight into building a big pot. Different hand building techniques will be discussed and demonstrated over the two days, while you work on your own vessel. We will also chat about surface decoration and glazing. This is a relaxed workshop with all day clay conversations where you are welcome to ask Pie any ceramic questions you like.

You will leave at the end of the two days with a sense of achievement, new hand building skills, some new friends, and the knowledge that your pot can be collected after it is dried and fired by The Kiln Room.

The Kiln Room will carefully dry your pot, bisque it, glaze the inside and fire it. This may take a few weeks as each of these processes takes time. There is no hurrying clay!

Bring…

  • Apron
  • Tools (you may have favourites). We have plenty – kidneys and scrapers may be useful
  • Notebook/visual diary
  • Some ideas about the shape of the pot you would like to build

We will provide…

  • Clay, banding wheels, tools
  • A light lunch, along with tea, coffee and snacks
  • Drying and firing of your pot and contact for when it is ready for collection.

The Big Pot weekend was absolutely one of the best courses I’ve ever attended. Instructor/facilitators Pie and assistant Michelle were so attentive to individual aspirations imaginings and technical needs. And at the end- a very big pot and great sense of accomplishment. Warm inclusive atmosphere.

Pie Bolton's Big Pot weekend class was fabulous. We learnt about the best clays to use when you go 'big', and lots of insider tips and tricks from the master herself, ensured we all finished our big pots in time. I would highly recommend this class if you want to go big in your handbuilding.

Wonderful class - learnt so much! Pie is a great teacher - very clear and patient and has so much knowledge to share. I am not a hand builder but with Pie’s guidance I made a pot beyond my expectations. Venue is perfect for workshops and everything one needs is available to use. Great food served up as well.

We certainly had fun and everyone seem thrilled with their outcomes. Your beautiful (and big) pot is safely and slowly drying until it is ready for firing. Loved having you in the class! Pie :)
