Description

Looking to pick up some wood working skills? Interested in doing woodwork but intimidated by the machines involved? During this course, you will learn how to safely and properly use the machinery in the Woodshop here at MakerSpace. We will introduce and practice using the Panel Saw, Jointer, Thicknesser, Bandsaw, Router and Drill Press. This course will provide a great foundation for undertaking your own future woodwork projects in the wood workshop. 

 

At the end of the 2 sessions the you will have produced a Cutting Board from American Ash Wood (max dimensions 45 x 25cm). All timber and materials included in the price.

 

We Will Cover:

Session 1:

  • workshop tour and OHS procedure
  • basic introduction to timber selection
  • cut timber to size using the panel saw and bandsaw
  • dressing timber using jointer and thicknesser
  • gluing up

 

Session 2:

  • using router to shape edges
  • use drill press to create finger handle
  • sanding and oiling

Student age 

MakerSpace is an 18+ facility, and our classes and facilities are designed for adults.

Disabled access 

Unfortunately our new space cannot offer suitable wheelchair access. We are currently working on improving our facilities to make them accessible for all. 

Parking 

We have very limited parking spaces on Gerald Street so if you're driving here please allow time to look for parking on our street or nearby streets.


Students must wear covered shoes, have long hair tied back and wear appropriate safety gear when using equipment.  All students will be shown how to use appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment).

 MakerSpace &company and its tutors will provide training in how to use all equipment and relevant machinery and tools to students during the course.  It is essential that no equipment or machinery be used while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

 While all care will be taken, it is the responsibility of the student to follow all instructions and use all the equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

Great workshop, well looked after and equipped. Jerry was an amazing instructor, fun, engaging and really pragmatic. I would highly recommend!

These classes were so much fun! I had no idea going in to them why we would need six hours to make a chopping board, but it was because of the variety of tools we got to explore, the conversations about the project and the many stages required to get a sexy finished board. It was low key and that’s why I enjoyed it - it was a super safe space to dip my toe into woodworking. 10/10 recommend this class

It was a fun class, learnt a lot, good student to teacher ratio. Unfortunately some of the tools like the straightener were not properly maintained so we couldn't use them and had to work around, not ideal.

Cancellations & Refunds

If the organiser cancels the class:

You are entitled to a transfer or credit note.

If you can't attend the class:

  • A refund can be requested 5 days before class starts. An admin fee of AU$25.00 applies.
  • A transfer can be requested anytime before the class starts. Free of charge.
  • A credit note can be requested anytime before the class starts. Free of charge.

No changes will be allowed after these times.
