Mary will provide you with a design on calico for you to work as an applique to go on a garment or perhaps a handbag. This taster workshop will introduce you to a few bead & sequin embroidery techniques, which will add texture and sparkle to your fashion and textile items. Mary will show you examples of her own work and images of work by others. Then she will demonstrate the bead and sequin embroidery techniques in the sample that she has brought to the class.
This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners in bead and sequin embroidery.
A kit including, beads, sequins, sewing thread, velvet mat, beading needles and calico will be provided and is included in the cost of the workshop. Students will need to bring a small embroidery hoop (available at any textile or craft shop) that has a diameter between 15cm–20cm, a small pair of scissors, pencil, and a small clamp or weight for the frame when you need to be hands-free.

ABOUT THE TEACHER
Mary Brown has trained at the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace in London. Her expertise ranges from surface stitching, goldwork embroidery and bead and sequin embroidery, and she has published a book on Goldwork Embroidery. Mary worked as a Visual Arts teacher in Senior Colleges until 2003, where she introduced stitching and embroidery as an important means for expression, mainly for Art Wearables. She has been a sessional lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney for 10 years, delivering lectures on embroidery and running embroidery workshops for all 2nd year students in Fashion & Textile Design. Mary also designs and creates embroidered garments and textiles for exhibition.

MakerSpace is an 18+ facility, and our classes and facilities are designed for adults.

Unfortunately our new space cannot offer suitable wheelchair access. We are currently working on improving our facilities to make them accessible for all.
We have very limited parking spaces on Gerald Street so if you're driving here please allow time to look for parking on our street or nearby streets.
Students must wear covered shoes, have long hair tied back and wear appropriate safety gear when using equipment. All students will be shown how to use appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment).
MakerSpace &company and its tutors will provide training in how to use all equipment and relevant machinery and tools to students during the course. It is essential that no equipment or machinery be used while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
While all care will be taken, it is the responsibility of the student to follow all instructions and use all the equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

Cancellations: We rarely cancel classes, but occasional things come up beyond our control. Our classes are very small to ensure you have a great learning experience, but we need a minimum of 4 students to run most of our classes. If a class is cancelled, we will get in touch by phone or email, and discuss your options which include refund, credit or transfer to another date.
Kids in classes: MakerSpace classes are designed for adults. Kids aged 14-17 can book this class on the condition that an accompanying adult also participates - which means booking two places. If you have questions about kids in the workshop, please read this.
