BYO Project Woodworking Class

Woodworking - Term Class

Over 20 people have attended this class

Are you one of the many aspiring woodworkers, furniture makers, object designers? You have loads of big ideas, a little experience (perhaps you’ve taken some of our other classes?) and you’re looking to commit to a more ambitious project? But you need the gear, space – and a little extra expertise?

Join our Bring Your Own Project WoodWorking class!

Over 5 weeks in a small group of up to 4, the teacher will support you as you progress though your self-directed project/s at your own pace. Once inducted on the machinery you will also have access to our workshop 6 days per week so you come back and work autonomously throughout the entire 5 week period.

During the tutored sessions you’ll plan out your project, refine your designs, connect with local material suppliers, learn essential woodworking skills, new techniques and be inducted (or do a refresher) on our woodworking machinery.

Total beginners – this is not for you. You are asked to take one or two of our intro courses first- the chopping board or coffee table are great options.  What do you get? 5 weeks, 3 hours a session, max 4 participants, and a dedicated Technician to help you:

  • Machinery inductions and/or refreshers.
  • Address skills gaps for essential woodwork skills.
  • Make a game plan for your project.
  • Have access to our workshop to continue working in between tutored sessions.
  • Refine and resolve the design and tackle making it.
  • Refresh your machinery and tool skills, and provide safety inductions as you need them.
  • Refine techniques and skills in making and machinery use.
  • Guide you through your project from beginning to end.
  • Some materials are included, but students are expected to bring their own materials for their projects – the teacher can help with recommendations.

  • Project Classes are intended for people who have achieved some proficiency in woodwork, but want a bit of support to realise more ambitious projects, work efficiently, hit new goals, or simply be safer in the workshop.

  • Book into the next available BYO Project class.
  • Bring drawings, materials, consumables (glue, screws, nails, sandpaper, masking tape etc.) and anything else you need to work on your project. MakerSpace can recommend suppliers. Please feel free to get in touch with us prior to your first class by emailing: hello@makerspace.org.au to discuss your idea.
  • The technician will work across the group, making sure you stay on track.
  • Will you finish your project in the 5 weeks? Depends on your project and your skill level, but good things take time. It will likely take several sessions, and the Tech will be happy to scope this with you as you progress.

Hailing from Tijuana, Mexico via San Diego, CA, Briana Trujillo is an international fine woodworking designer. She is inspired by life in two cities where people migrate constantly. Her work embraces traditional fine woodworking skills but is infused with a creative and sculptural impulse.

Traveling frequently between multiple countries, she draws inspiration from contrasting elements of the routine created by living across borders, blending geometric styles and tones into something aesthetically stimulating to engage her viewers. Each of her pieces explores a different image of her understanding of this transborder culture.

Briana is our resident MakerSpace and Company workshop manager, with a broad range of skills including woodwork, metalwork, ceramics, concrete and sculpture. Whatever idea you throw at her, she has the reference points and experience to refine it and make it a reality.

PLEASE NOTE when booking a class with MakerSpace &company you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions:

Awesome experience, Briana was so helpful and so much fun to work with. She had her hands full with two software engineers without much handy work experience and we managed to build what we planned! Planning to come back for a second run. It is an epic satisfaction when you get to build something that you see transform from raw pieces of wood into the final product.

I made a small seat from reclaimed wood with Briana's expert guidance on tools, technique and some much appreciated creative input. This class is a great chance to gain confidence using the workshop equipment and finish a small project
