About CakeGrll...

Hayley began her cake and pastry career making custom cakes for friends and family from my tiny home kitchen, before throwing in her day job to enrol at TAFE. Only a couple of months into her pastry journey a TAFE classmate hooked her up with an interview at BlackStar Pastry, home of the infinitely and internationally instagrammed Strawberry Watermelon Cake.

After a few months, a few hundred square kilometres of paletted rosewater cream and jigsawed, macerated watermelon she began climbing the BlackStar ranks and earned the opportunity to work on some killer projects including recipe development for the Kinokuniya store, leading a collaboration with the darling of the Sydney cake world, Katherine Sabbath, designing and bringing to life two ginormous cakes (spackled together with a mountain of buttercream) for the Sydney Design Festival in 2014, and managed the production of BlackStar Pastry's pride and joy outside of Sydney for the very first time at the Night Noodle Markets in Melbourne.

These days she's making the sweet, flakey, buttery, fluffy and oh so yummy stuff at Inner West community hub Two Chaps in Marrickville.

Check out her delicious work!  We can't promise your stomach wont grumble... https://www.instagram.com/cakegrrl/

A fun introduction to the basics of gingerbread construction. The instructions were easy to follow and the final product tasted even better than it looked.

It was fun but I think I expected more for the price. A gift pack of ginger bread making equipment would have made it worth while. It felt a little too crafty! But for some people I think they liked that element - I guess I was hoping to learn some professional techniques.
