If you love traditional embroidery, you’ll likely fall head over heels for the punch needle version. Quicker and easier to learn, this technique lets you play with texture to create a woven design - like painting with yarn. The tools used are very similar to those needed for regular embroidery, with one game-changing new apparatus: the punch needle. Picture a pen with a needle on the end. The needle is threaded and punched - KAPOW - through the hooped fabric to pull up a loop of fibre. This method is very similar to rug hooking and actually forms the same type of stitch in the opposite direction.
All materials are provided, and you’re free to create a design of your own choice or use the available templates. We’ll be using an Oxford Punch needle and 7-inch bamboo hoops, and you’ll take home your finished piece ready to display. Experiment with texture, have a yarn over yarn, and punch some more fibre into your life.
Teacher: Anna, founder of The Studio Workshops, is a relentless lifelong maker. And after she had kids, she realised she should be sharing her experiences. She created The Studio Workshops as a space for all-ages creatives to commune, be inspired and collaborate. It’s a celebration of all things handmade and has a definite emphasis on fun. Since first introducing punch needling into her repertoire of classes in late 2018, she’s taught over 200 students. This particular discipline is a favourite of Anna’s as it’s so easy to teach, learn and be inspired by. Find Anna online at The Studio Workshops.
