This workshop will focus on the design, construction, and carving of traditional wooden paddles or Waka Hoe. Starting with an introduction to carving, participants will work from initial design through to cutting, grinding and sanding to create their own uniquely adorned paddle with an understanding of its use, form, and function. Wikuki and Tania will share traditional stories and chants, to broaden participants’ knowledge of waka, navigation, and paddles.
As a Tohunga Whakairo/Master Carver, with over 40 years’ experience, Wikuki has created many heritage taonga, including the intricately carved masterpiece Pou Kapūa, the tallest Māori/Pacific carving in the world. Wikuki has many relationships throughout NZ and the Pacific and continues to learn and build on his passion for Mana Whenua and indigenous community development, cultural resilience and robust futures, believing stronger identities make stronger people and families.
A creative designer, strategist, voyager and storyteller, Tania (Maori/Tongan/Pacific) seeks to ignite and empower people to come together and collectively expand the horizons of the Maori, Pacific and Indigenous worlds. With deep cultural intelligence and wisdom, thought, word and action, Tania focuses on making the natural native world visible through Indigenous culture, art, science, and technology.
