3 hours x 4 Weeks
Over 20 people have attended this class

Description

*This course is for students who have already completed our Beginners Level 1 and 2, OR students with previous oil painting experience.

In this four-week course students will be working on one painting over four weeks, and will be able to bring in an image of their choice to work from. You will need an A4 or A3 high-resolution image in both colour and black and white to work from.

Working in layers, we will begin with a simple technique to transfer your chosen image to the substrate (supplied), before going on to translate that to a monochromatic under-painting exploring the subtleties of values. In the following weeks we will learn how to add colour and glazing to transform your work without losing or over-working the underpainting, keeping it 'fresh'.

Beginning with a monochromatic foundation helps to keep the painting values uniform before applying colour, and working in layers allows you to use dark and light to maximum effect before adding colour.

An extension of our beginners courses, the techniques and skills learnt in Level 3 will assist students to work with confidence at home, and further develop skills and subtleties in tonal painting.

Students will learn:

  • How to identify and translate tonal values from colour to greyscale
  • How to work in layers, and use the underpainting to build a solid foundation
  • Where and how to add colour for maximum effect
  • How to select the right brushes for different areas of the painting
  • Glazing: How to apply and build delicate washes of colour to transform your work

Students should already have a
