Our Textile and Surface Pattern Design short course offers a comprehensive overview of surface design, starting with traditional art-making and digital skills using Adobe Photoshop.
Built up over eight weeks we will start with traditional art-making methods, and move into learning and applying digital techniques. We’ll study colour theory and colorisation techniques, as well as research and analyse trends. We’ll look at the differences in design between home product and fashion textiles and how to design for a market segment.
This immersive is perfect for those wanting a holistic overview of textile and surface design practices, geared towards professional development. Our course is a practical, hands-on learning experience. While we love online learning, sometimes it helps to have clear instruction from someone in the room to communicate with one-on-one.

The Ink & Spindle studio is located in the Sacred Heart Building at Abbotsford Convent. All day parking is available in the car park directly across from Abbotsford Convent on St Heliers Street.
The machines accept credit cards, notes and gold coins. Parking is $2/hr, and funds from the car park go towards the restoration and daily operation of the Convent.
Street parking is available along Clarke St and surrounding streets, but please be aware that the majority of street parking is requires a Permit.

The SURFACE 1°22 Design School is an education project conceived by designer Emily Wills from design studio SURFACE 1°22. Having worked in design education for over ten years, Emily saw an increasing need for practical training in digital and technical skills for the surface design industries across Interiors, Fashion and Product Design. Her teaching style and easy to follow demonstrations aim to simplify and demystify the design process.
The SURFACE 1°22 Design School offers specific project-based courses that fill the gap between hobbyist workshops and accredited training. Short courses are affordable as hours are compacted by eliminating assessment and providing practice-led teaching and teaching. Our intimate classes are designed for participants of all abilities. Emily is also available for private tuition and have been invited to teach at various spaces and places including secondary schools and universities in Australia, Singapore and London.
Cancellation & Refund Policy
In the unfortunate event that you are unable to attend a workshop or short course,we will transfer your ticket to another date. We require an email notifying us at least 48 hours before commencement of the booked class.
Bookings include a non-refundable 15% deposit of the ticket price. If you are unable to attend a workshop or transfer dates, and notify us at least 48 hours before the commencement of your booked class we can offer a partial refund of your ticket, less the deposit amount.
Please note that we cannot offer refunds for no-shows or partial refunds for latecomers. If you do not turn up to a workshop you forfeit your booking and full fees. If you miss individual classes within a short course you forfeit these classes.
Please note that in the extremely unfortunate event we need to cancel a workshop or short course, we reserve the right do so if (a) the workshop or short course does not attain a minimum number of ticket holders or (b) a presenter falls ill. In the unfortunate circumstance of a class being cancelled, participants will be notified at least 24 hours before commencement and booking transfers will be offered.
The SURFACE 1°22 Design School offers hands-on workshops and short courses in fashion, interior, product and textile design. Our classes are for participants of all abilities and provide hands-on, practical and skills-based teaching which aim to simplify and demystify the design process. These workshops and short courses are the intellectual property of Emily Wills, and participants agree to adhere to the following Terms & Conditions.
The participant will not reproduce, copy, or market any of the handouts, verbal or visual instruction or any other short course materials from the SURFACE 1°22 DesignSchool for financial or non financial gain.
