Ever wanted to try your hand at street art and graffiti style work? Or have you been giving it a go, but could use some tips from an expert? Here is your opportunity to access all of the tips and tricks from professional public artist and master of the can, Darren Hutchens. This workshop is designed as an introduction to the physical and conceptual approaches to working with a spray can and covers a range of aerosol art tips and techniques such as…
- anatomy of a spray can and features of various brands
- nozzle selection
- physicality, saftey and ethics of operating a spray can
- the design elements and principles applied to spray painted artwork
- incorporation of mixed media approaches such as stencils, paste-ups and paint markers
Through basic skills development, you will gain the confidence to work with spray paint as a medium for your own art practice. There is a max of 8 students to help you really maximise your learning.
The workshop will cover spray can techniques and introduce you to other street art and graffiti forms such as tagging, piecing, stencilling and paste-ups, various terminology and ways to approach painting.
You will experiment with these techniques to create collaborative work and your own individual piece on MDF board.
About the teacher:

Please note, there is no parking directly adjacent to Workshop Freo. Parking is available at the J Shed, E Shed, Bather's Beach parking lots, and street parking is available in High Street, Cliff Street and Phillimore St. The use of public transport and local CAT buses is encouraged.
There is a PDF document attached to all booking confirmations with a map. Mrs Trivett Place is a sharp left just before Fleet Street. It looks more like a driveway than a road. Keep walking up the hill, past Walyalup Cultural Centre and the public toilets. You will then see our little green building, number 15, tucked beneath the Roundhouse, and overlooking Bather's Beach and the J Shed.
Access is also possible from the back steps behind the J Shed or the footpath behind the Roundhouse. It's a little tucked away and if in doubt, type in 'Workshop Freo' to Google Maps or call 0431774371 for some assistance!
- If you have your own respirator, mask and gloves, that would be great. If you don't have them, don't stress, disposable mask and gloves will be provided.
- Sketchbook, visual diary, with some concepts.
- Reference materials if you have something you'd like to work from.
Closed toe shoes preferred. Clothes you don't mind getting paint on.
Suitable for all levels
