Description

This is a lecture-style workshop for designers, letterers and illustrators who want to work with letterpress.

In this 1.5 hour class we will cover:

  • A brief history of printing, type, typesetting and Gutenberg’s letterpress and how it has evolved and thrived in the digital age.
  • Hand-drawn illustrations and lettering, digital type and how they work best in letterpress.
  • Papers, inks, foils and similar processes such as embossing (you’ll go home knowing your deboss from your emboss).
  • Ink-mixing Pantones from scratch.

A letterpress demonstration (with audience participation) will show the process in detail from finished art, to finished print.

You’ll walk away feeling confident about your next big project with a greater understanding of the letterpress process.

About Amy Constable from Saint Gertrude

In 2008 Amy rescued her first printing press from a chicken shed in Moe, and that press rescued her from her last job in advertising. 7 years and 5 presses later, Amy runs one of Australia’s original ‘new letterpress’ studios and prints for a wide range of clients and artists throughout Australia and the world. For the last two years, Amy has been running a monthly Introduction to Letterpress class and Open Access Letterpress Studio; the only program of its kind in Australia.
