Description

Ever wanted to give Street Art a try but don't know where to start?

This introductory workshop is suitable for complete beginners through to those with some previous experience. You'll learn about the history of the graffiti and street art movements and the impact it has on our urban landscape today, and see why street art is the largest growing art form since the renaissance.

Learn about the different types of street art (freehand, stencil, stickers and tags) before trying your hand at all 4 techniques. You'll get to create your own mixed-media 'Street Art' inspired artwork which you'll get to take home with you!

This workshop will be run by Melbourne artist George Ironside, who has been teaching workshops in Berlin over the past 5 years. George has curated over 200 exhibitions globally focused mainly on street and graffiti art, but her true passion is to share her love of aerosol with new-comers and to see more people giving it a go.

ABOUT WALL TO WALL FESTIVAL

What evolved from a small group of people with a big idea has become one of the most innovative community development programs in Victoria. Led by the Juddy Roller creative management team, in collaboration with The Benalla Street Art Committee, Wall to Wall Festival’s unique approach to regional arts and regional development has proven to be a revolutionary approach to building stronger and more diverse communities.

Wall to Wall festival accessibility offers a range of meaningful ways for large segments of the community to get “hands on” and participate in the event.  Demographics at this years Wall to Wall Festival ranged from children as young as 5 years old, working with our professional artists to create an oversized “paint by numbers” mural, through to people up to 90 years old taking part in the guided street art tours and artist talks.

Wall to Wall’s management team is committed to community engagement and participation as a tool for increasing community pride and cultural capital in Benalla and the surrounding district. Wall to Wall Festival’s community engagement programs have been hugely successful, with hundreds of people participating in various events and production elements of the program, as well as thousands attending the festival and enjoying it at their own leisure. Due to the relatively small geographical size of Benalla, the festival creates an all encompassing ambience in the town that has never before existed, helping to enrich community. An entire tour of the 28 murals can be taken in approximately 1 hour, making it one of the most densely populated outdoor street art “galleries” in Australia, even when compared to street art “capitals” such as Fitzroy and Collingwood.

Our commitment to gender parity and educational programs enhances the experience and empowerment felt by the people of Benalla, and also creates long lasting, tangible effects on the long term social and cultural values of the community.

11 April 2017 • Wall To Wall Festival - Street Art Workshop

This class was brilliant - George (GEO) the instructor was great - so informative and helpful throughout the session. We had great fun trying to be street artists, learning about street art and stenciling. We made our own panel which was fun - although clearly I am no competition to a real street artist - still had a ball.
