Join Naomi to learn the technique of making Rugs from up-cycled fabric and remnants. Using only a safety pin and strips of fabric you will each make the beginnings of a Rag Rug. Making rag rugs is a great way to up-cycle bed linen and to make use of your fabric stash. We will provide a selection of fabrics to work with the during the Workshop however you are encouraged to bring your own lightweight woven Cottons (including bed sheets, pillowcases..) that can be torn into long strips to make your Rag Rug.
This workshop gives you the starting point and techniques for making this style of Rag Rug, however the process of completing your own rug will take more than [2/3] hours. This means that you will be taking your project home with you to complete.
ABOUT NAOMI HUNTSMAN
This is my 20th year of sewing! I got into fabrics and sewing at 16 when I got my 1st domestic sewing machine for my birthday (thanks Mum!) After high school I studied Education then Fashion Design, graduating in 2005. I had a fledgling label and adopted 2 beautiful industrial sewing machines before moving to London for a couple years of travel. I’ve worked for the ethically and Australian made label, Cue, for 5 years and spent 4.5 years at Gorman where I’m sure many of you Brisbane gals will recognise me from I’ve been a Market Coordinator with Suitcase Rummage for around 4 years and have been running Rag Rug (up-cycling) workshops since 2013. With many fingers in many pies I’m now super happy to be a part of The Fabric Store Brisbane team where you’ll find me 2-3 days a week also! Having gained such an insight into fashion over the years I’ve become a massive advocate for more sustainable practices within the clothing industry and wish to use The Sewloist as an avenue to connect with people, increase awareness and to provide an alternative.
I love encouraging people’s self-expression through creativity. I’m a big believer in making personal connections to our garments so as to value them more. My big goal for 2017 is to become more involved in the Maker Community and to launch The Sewloist online store this coming Spring!
