Learn the in’s and out’s of coffee painting, and explore this unique medium. Hang on… what’s coffee painting?
We’re not talking about the love heart shapes your favourite barista leaves in your morning latte. Coffee painting is a technique that uses instant coffee as paint to create striking artworks, using a technique somewhat similar to that used with watercolour. Coffee painting begun with refugee & asylum seeker artists in Australian immigration detention centres who, unable to easily access paints and other art materials, learned to use what was available to them. It is now an art style symbolic to the refugee journey and has been used to convey the journey experienced by thousands of people seeking asylum through art.
*This class is part of a new workshop series 'Art From The World,' an initiative led by Work-Shop and Welcome Studio.
Alwy Fadhel is a Welcome Studio artist, an art-based social enterprise partnering with people seeking asylum to create positive social change and spread a message of ‘welcome’. Welcome Studio artists are from refugee backgrounds or are currently seeking asylum in Australia. They bring and share art and craft skills from their own cultures and experiences that enrich our Australian culture and society. Find more on Welcome Studio at www.welcomestudio.com.au
About Alwy Fadhel:
Alwy Fadhel learnt the art of coffee painting from a fellow detainee whilst in Australian immigration detention. Having never been very involved in making art, Alwy picked this technique up fast and has since had his work exhibited in many galleries including the MCA, Sydney. He’s work is striking, personal and raw, often evoking the psychological hardships that detainees commonly face in Australian immigration detention including homesickness, anxiety, depression and trauma.
