Description

This relaxed and fun workshop is for anyone who would like to learn more about portrait drawing with charcoal and ink.


Catherine will explain and demonstrate the fundamentals of structure and proportion and keeping the portrait loose and lively with the brushstrokes of ink, adding the highlights with white ink.


Catherine will help everyone with individual tuition throughout the day.


Catherine's work is distinctive, bold, vibrant and full of energy, she concentrates on teaching confidence with the medium and uses the media on hand to create unusual affects.


WHAT TO BRING? 

- Reference: Portrait subject in black and white that might interest you. Catherine will also have plenty of reference. material 

- Paper: 2 or 3 full sheets of cold pressed good quality cotton based watercolour or drawing paper such as Stonehenge, or canvas if you prefer. Some A4 sheets to test inks on.

- Ink: A bottle of waterproof Atelier black drawing ink and a bottle of white permanent ink.

- Tools you have for creating marks:

         - e.g. brushes, dip pens, bamboo pens, permanent fine liner pens, palette knives, sponges, etc. various soft brushes medium to large for ink.

        - White gel pen
- Black texta pen or Catherine uses a white and a black POSCA pen. Available at Office works for linear work.
        - Charcoal for drawing


Other:
- Plastic pipettes, usually come in a bag of about 10 (optional).
- Notebook, sketchbook. 2B pencil, eraser, sharpener, ruler.
- Masking tape not coloured.
- 5 small empty bottles or jars with lids to create tones of ink.
- Soft rags/kitchen Towel.
- Glad wrap and white tissue paper (All used for textures).
- Glue stick.
- Scissors.
- Masking Fluid (optional).
- 1 x small soft round brush for fine work with masking fluid.
- Small water spray.
- Plastic mixing palette with deep wells.

What you will learn

  • During this workshop you will use a variety of charcoal and ink drawing techniques to create exciting portraits.
  • You will learn how to create textures into the ink using various brushes and drawing tools and you will discover some exciting new ways to use them.
  • In this workshop you will learn how to build up the portrait in charcoal, then using a clear sealant to allow the use of the ink on top of the drawing.

Catherine's workshop was so valuable. I learnt many new techniques. Catherine has such a broad artistic knowledge and talent and shares this in her workshop in a very entertaining way. The time flew and it was over too soon!

Catherine is an expert and enthusiastic teacher. It was such a worthwhile day. We worked with many different materials and learnt how they interact in wonderful and unexpected ways. Very useful techniques for creating rich and spontaneous works of art.

If the organiser cancels the class:

You are entitled to a full refund.

If you can't attend the class:

  • A transfer can be requested anytime before the class starts. Free of charge.

No changes will be allowed after these times.

We recommend the refund upgrade option upon checkout in case you’re not able to attend the class. Learn more about refund upgrade option.

Terms & Conditions

Transfers for classes that cannot be attended need to be made up within the same term.

Non members are entitled to only purchase ONE single $26 tutored class. All additional purchases require the participant to become a member of the Box Hill Art Group. This condition excludes Wednesday Life Drawing sessions and one day workshops which are open to everyone.

Memberships are not transferable to other people. Class payments are not transferable to other members.
