Description
This course is for anyone looking for a fun way to get back into drawing, for people who already have a creative practice but want to extend themselves into cartooning, or those who already cartoon but want to devote some time to body language, dynamic character design, character movement and inking.
Week 1 – Faces
- Drawing emotions.
- A guide to face proportions.
- A guide to basic caricature.
Week 2 – Hands, Feet and Body
- How to build hands.
- How to build feet.
- A guide to body proportions.
- Learn to exaggerate shapes to create interesting character designs.
Week 3 – Characters with Attitude
- How to turn stiff figure drawings into characters that have attitude and feeling.
- Simple perspective techniques that add to the story of your character.
Week 4 – Movement and Sound
- Different ways to show movement
- How to show sound
- How to create thought and speech balloons that add extra expression to your character
Week 5 – Inking and Colouring
- An in depth look at original inked artwork by Sarah Howell
- Time to experiment with different inking tools
- Discussion of how to support and extend your new drawing skills beyond the course.
What you will learn
- The course will cover Faces including Emotions and Basic Caricature.
- Body Proportions where and how to exaggerate shapes to create interesting characters.
- Characters with Attitude, Movement and Sound, and Inking and Colouring.
What you will get
- This short course in cartooning offers a way to explore the exciting and dynamic art form. Those who already have experience in cartoon drawing can expect to hone their skills in the use of body language, dynamic character design, movement and inking.
What to bring
- A4 and A3 photocopy paper
- Pencils, Erasers, Sharpeners, scissors
- Black marker pens, it is nice to have some of these pens : Pentel SES15C Sign Brush Pen Black from Officeworks, but they aren’t essential.
What to wear
Comfortable casual dress, you might need an apron or similar.

This course will suit anyone 16 years or older with an interest in cartoon drawing.

Our history
The Box Hill Art Group Inc. was established in 1952 and since then it has nurtured many thousands of budding artists, as well as stretching the skills of experienced and exhibiting artists.
Moreover, we cater for watercolours, oils, acrylics, pastels, drawing, life drawing and mixed media.
We also offer our member’s access to lessons, paint outs, art demonstrations, competitions, exhibitions and arts awards.
The Box Hill Art Group will open up a whole new colourful world for you to enjoy.
Our membership
Membership is open to anyone between 16 and 116 years of age. Whether you are just starting out in painting or drawing or have been doing it for years you will love being a part of this group, meeting with like minded people to express yourself visually.
Your Teacher
Sarah Howell makes comics, teaches comics and develops projects that advocate for her art form. She is known for Homecooked Comics Festival and Squishface Comic Studio. She currently teaches at the Australian College of the Arts (Collarts).
In January 2025 her studio’s book Squishbook: Drawing with Squishface Studio and Friends received a Highly Commended from the Victorian Premier’s Literature Award.

Terms & Conditions
Transfers for classes that cannot be attended need to be made up within the same term.
Non members are entitled to only purchase ONE single $30 tutored class. All additional purchases require the participant to become a member of the Box Hill Art Group. This condition excludes Life Drawing sessions and one day workshops which are open to everyone.
Memberships are not transferable to other people. Class payments are not transferable to other members.
