This is a 2-day workshop - Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 January.
Explore the ancient art of indigo dyeing in this unique hands on workshop.
Over two days you learn to make and use rice paste to create resist patterns on fabric prior to dyeing the fabric in an indigo vat.
This technique is based on traditional katazome indigo dyeing from Japan, though the methods and recipes used in this workshop have been modified to use materials that are easily available here in Melbourne.
On day one you will learn to make and apply rice paste to fabric using stencils or brushes.
On day two you will learn to dye the treated fabric in our indigo vat, carefully building up colour through the repeated dipping and airing process that makes indigo a natural dye like no other.

Peta has worked with textiles for many years and her interests have moved back and forth between weaving, knitting, spinning, felt making and dyeing. The common theme in her work is a love of creating pattern in textiles through stitch, the interplay between yarn colours, dye placement or weave structure.
A major focus in recent years has been natural dyeing, the practice of which sits at the intersection of art, science, cultural tradition, gardening and enjoyment and appreciation of the natural world. Natural indigo dyeing has particularly become a passion, with its own unique and fascinating chemistry, and Peta has studied and worked to understand all aspects from growing plants and extracting pigments to knowing how to use those pigments to create different types of dye vats. She brings a great enthusiasm to her teaching and hopes to teach you why as well as how.
